Destination>Innwa

A few kilometre south of Amarapura, the Innwa Bridge spans the Ayeyarwaddy River across to Sagaing. Just south of the bridge the Myitnge River flows in the Ayeyarwaddy, and south of this river stands the ancient city of Innwa. Founded in 1364 with the name of Ratnapura " the town of Gems " it kept its role as capital for a long time. The ramains of its past splendour are now scattered in the vegetation close to the river Myitnge, and among the shrubs and cracked walls. The 27-metre-high masonry watch tower ‘the Nanmyin’, known as the leaning tower of Innwa, which upper portion was shattered by the 1838 earthquake and the rest has taken on a precarious tilt, is all that remains of the palace built by King Bagyidaw.
